New to TeaSpill and feeling like you walked into a conversation halfway through? Here's every piece of platform slang, community language, and TeaSpill-specific term — from Spill to UPDATE to Packaging.
TeaSpill's community has developed its own vocabulary — part dating slang, part platform-specific language, part cultural shorthand. Knowing the terms makes you immediately fluent in the lounge. Here are the 18 most important ones.
Spill
To share your story, experience, or situation openly with the community. Derived from 'spill the tea' — sharing information others need to hear. 'I'm about to spill' means someone is about to post something significant.
In use: "She came in here and absolutely spilled about what happened with her ex."
The Tea
The information, story, or receipts behind a situation. 'What's the tea?' means 'what's the story?' 'Hot tea' means especially significant or revealing information.
In use: "She has the tea on this man — apparently half the lounge has dated him."
Red Flag
A behaviour, pattern, or statement that indicates danger, manipulation, or dishonesty in a romantic partner. In TeaSpill, voting 🚩 means the community believes the poster should leave or seriously reconsider. On-platform, 'red flag' votes appear as live percentages.
In use: "He texted me 47 times when I didn't reply for two hours. That's a red flag, right? (spoiler: 91% red flag vote)"
Yellow Flag
A vote indicating caution — not an immediate emergency, but behaviour that warrants attention and more information. Yellow flag votes often come with comments asking for more context.
In use: "The community voted 63% yellow on this one — they need to know if he's done it before."
Green Flag
A positive sign — behaviour that indicates emotional maturity, respect, or genuine interest. Also used as a vote when the community believes the poster's concern is unfounded based on what's been shared.
In use: "He remembered a minor thing I mentioned three weeks ago. Green flag behaviour."
Receipts
Evidence — screenshots, messages, voice notes, or any documentation of a situation. 'Where are the receipts?' means 'can you prove this?' 'She has receipts' means she has documented evidence of what she's claiming.
In use: "She posted the receipts and the whole lounge went silent."
UPDATE
A follow-up post to an original situation post. When you UPDATE, everyone who reacted to your original post gets notified. The UPDATE system is how TeaSpill closes the loop on situations and how the community learns what actually happened.
In use: "I posted about him three weeks ago — UPDATE: he did it again. You were all right."
Lurk Mode
Browsing the community without posting or commenting. A 'lurker' is someone who reads posts and votes but doesn't contribute their own stories. Lurking is completely normal — the community holds value whether or not you post.
In use: "I was in lurk mode for two weeks before I felt ready to post my own situation."
Glow-Up
A post-breakup transformation — physical, emotional, professional, or all three. In TeaSpill, the Glow-Up Corner is a dedicated room for documenting and celebrating recovery and growth after a bad relationship.
In use: "Six months post-breakup and I'm posting my glow-up update. I'm unrecognisable."
Sister Circle
One of TeaSpill's six rooms — the general support space for non-dating situations, connection, celebration, and community. Also used generally to describe the sense of collective female solidarity within the platform.
In use: "The sister circle showed up for me when I needed them most."
Hot Take
A controversial or strong opinion about dating, men, or relationships. The Hot Takes room is where these opinions are posted for the community to debate. Hot takes get high engagement — the community does not hold back.
In use: "Hot take: a man who's never had a female friend is always a red flag. Discuss."
Situationship
A relationship that exists without official definition — more than casual, not quite a relationship, full of ambiguity and emotional investment. Widely used in TeaSpill posts to describe the grey-zone context many red flags appear in.
In use: "Three months in a situationship with this man and I still don't know what we are."
Love Bombing
A manipulation tactic where someone overwhelms a partner with excessive affection, attention, and intensity early in a relationship — often followed by withdrawal or control. One of the most commonly discussed patterns in the Red Flag Lounge.
In use: "He was texting me novels every day for three weeks. That was love bombing, I know that now."
Packaging
Community slang, originating from the Lagos community, for the performance of attractiveness, success, or desirability that a man presents before his actual behaviour becomes apparent. 'The packaging was beautiful but the product was broken.'
In use: "His packaging was immaculate — career, looks, communication. But after six weeks, the packaging came off."
The Lounge
Shorthand for the TeaSpill community as a whole, or specifically the Red Flag Lounge. 'The lounge voted' means the community has weighed in on a situation.
In use: "Brought it to the lounge, and 89% said run."
Share Card
An auto-generated graphic of your post and its vote results that you can share externally without revealing the community's existence or your identity. They look like app screenshots and are designed to be shareable without context leakage.
In use: "I made a share card of the vote and sent it to my friends. Their reactions were everything."
Spiller
One of TeaSpill's four user personas. A Spiller is someone with stories to tell — they have lived through things the community needs to know. Also used casually to describe an active poster.
In use: "She's a regular spiller — her posts always get thousands of votes."
Red Flag Detector
One of TeaSpill's four user personas — and also an informal title for community members known for particularly accurate or insightful votes and comments.
In use: "She's the community's best red flag detector. She caught things in that post the original poster hadn't even noticed."
